The note also hints that Sir Daniel may be responsible for the death of Dick’s father, which causes the young man to suspect his benefactor and wonder if he is fighting on the right side of this war. The arrow, colored black, bears a note pronouncing a sentence of death on Sir Daniel and three of his closest cohorts. Before the battle begins, one of Dick’s colleagues is killed by an arrow from an unseen archer. Young squire Richard “Dick” Shelton doesn’t have an opinion either way, but his guardian, Sir Daniel Brackley, is for Lancaster, so Dick takes up arms for that side. As the novel opens, the forces of both parties are gathering for the Battle of Risingham (a fictional battle, I believe?).
